Introducing Blue and Red LED Light Therapy

To improve the appearance, elasticity and texture of your skin.

Effectively and affordably combat signs of ageing and treat acne!

LED Light Therapy is a simple and successful non laser, non UV light therapy. LED Light Therapy is a non-invasive treatment which has virtually no downtime!

What is Blue LED Therapy?

Blue LED Light Therapy effectively targets mild to moderate acne and skin inflammation. The LED wavelengths fights acne forming bacteria, alleviates redness, assists in the repair of scar tissue and rejuvenates the skin. Unlike other acne treatments which can cause dryness or discomfort to the skin, Blue LED reduces inflammation and promotes the natural healing process. Blue LED also helps prevent acne scars from forming.

What is Red LED Therapy?

Red LED Light Therapy penetrates deep into the dermis, energizing and repairing damaged cells,  stimulating collagen and elastin which plumps and firms the skin, promoting a more healthy and youthful appearance. Red LED dramatically improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles!

Suitable for all skin types!

Optimum results are achieved when combined with topical solutions.

Please contact us on (03) 9521 5533 if you would like more information or to find out which treatment is suitable for you.

Introducing the Dermapen

Dermapen Advanced Skin Needling Treatment is now available

at Avenue Advanced Skin Care!

What is Dermapen Advanced Skin Needling Treatment?

Dermapen is a non-invasive treatment which tightens, lifts and rejuvenates skin. Dermapen improves the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as minimizes pore size. It can also be used to treat acne scars and stretch marks.

This treatment will enhance the appearance, elasticity and texture of your skin and is an effective and affordable approach to combating signs of ageing!

How does Dermapen work?

Dermapen uses multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin. Active ingredients are supplied directly to deeper layers of the skin without epidermal damage. Dermapen’s multi-speed action allows safe and effective penetration of the skin layers enabling a high absorption of product. It is comfortable with minimal downtime. Dermapen is much safer and more efficient than Needling Rollers and has a superior effect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation. DermaPen is as effective as ablative laser treatments, such as Fractional laser, IPL, laser Resurfacing, and Chemical Peels.

What happens after the treatment?

Healing time can vary from one day up to a week. Straight after the treatment your skin will be slighty red and, depending on the depth of penetration, you may experience small pin point bleeding. Most of our patients experience instant results! Just a couple of days after the treatment the skin looks plumper and firmer and wrinkles appear softer. This is also the perfect treatment for patients wanting a quick ‘pick-me-up’. A light treatment will enhance the appearance, elasticity and texture of your skin, leaving patients with a brighter, clearer complexion. Just in time for the Spring Racing Carnival!

Please contact us on (03) 9521 5533 if you would like more information or to find out if Dermapen is suitable for you.

Pregnancy and your skin

Many of our readers will know Anita Newell, our delightful nurse injector. Recently Anita announced the exciting news that she is pregnant with her first child! We offer her and her husband Toby our warmest congratulations.

Pregnancy is such an exciting time – especially for first time mums! Sometimes however, there can be a less pleasant side to the experience when gestational hormones begin to run wild! Taking care of your complexion during pregnancy is an important part of helping mums-to-be to feel great about themselves!

Most advice available regarding pregnancy relates to what mums-to-be must avoid. For example, no soft cheese, no cold meats and no alcohol! During pregnancy it is most important to ensure that any oral medication is safe to take during pregnancy. For example, it has recently been shown that over the counter pain relieving medication such as Nurofen, Advil and Brufen can increase the risk of miscarriage.

Although certain skincare products are not suitable for use during pregnancy (such as retinoid (Vitamin A) serums), there are still many exciting products and treatments available to support and revitalize pregnant skin! Hormonal acne breakouts can be one of the less desirable side-effects of pregnancy.  At Avenue Advanced Skin Care we use specialised medical grade products which help control bacteria, reduce inflammation and positively influence skin texture and appearance. We also recommend a monthly Derma Sweep treatment with an Enzyme Peel.  This peel is designed to refresh and hydrate the skin as well as encourage natural healing. These topical treatments are completely safe to use during pregnancy.

Skin Care: Fish oils

Product of the Week

Fish Oils
What are the benefits of fish oils?  Most people are aware of the many health benefits of fish oils, specifically omega– 3 fatty acids.  They are recommended by cardiologists to help prevent heart disease, reduce high blood pressure and reduce cholesterol.

Did you know that omega-3 fatty acids are also important in the development of the eyes and parts of the brain used for learning, reasoning and memory.

In addition, fish oils have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and therefore may be helpful to patients with conditions such as arthritis and skin conditions such as eczema, acne and other inflammatory disorders.

Fish oils are specifically helpful for the skin by aiding wound healing and supporting the immune system.

If you do not eat at least 150gm of oily fish 3-4 times a week, then supplementing your diet with omega-3 fish oils may be useful.  The problem with taking highly concentrated fish oils is that they may be contaminated with a high concentration of mercury.

One of the best fish oils on the market is the Bioceuticals brand of Ultraclean EPA/DHA Plus which delivers a high concentrated dose of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with an extremely low mercury content.  We recommend taking 2-4 capsules a day, although people with specific medical conditions may benefit from an even higher dose.

Another powerful way for your skin to benefit from Omega-3 fatty acids is to take the Bioceuticals Alfa EFTA.  This is a vegetarian source of Omega-3, 6 and 9 plus Omega-7.  This is extracted from the fresh berry and fresh seed of the Buckthorn plant.

Alfa EFTA also contains antioxidants including natural carotenoids, vitamin E and vitamin C as well as amino acids and trace minerals.  Seed Buckthorn berry has been used in traditional Asian medicine for the maintenance of healthy skin and mucous membranes.

Vitamins for Healthy Skin

Michelle Casey, our Senior Aesthetician, recently attended a conference in Hobart where the latest advances in skin care were discussed.

There was plenty of discussion regarding the importance of vitamins for healthy skin.

Did you know?

Vitamin D is essential for healthy skin.  Studies have shown that depletion of Vitamin D is linked to a deficiency of the immune system.  It has now been associated with skin cancer including melanoma and also with breast cancer.

Vitamin B is also important for the skin as it re-balances Ph levels and suppresses excess oil production.  It actually acts as a booster for all topical skin care products with active ingredients.

There was also great news for melasma sufferers.   Research has shown a link between yeast in the gut and hormonal pigmentation (melasma).  Taking a probiotic will eliminate the yeast in your gut and help control melasma.

Avenue Advanced Skin Care has researched the vitamin manufacturers and selected Bio Ceuticals as our preferred supplier.  Please call us on 9521 5533 for an appointment to discuss which products you should use and which vitamins you should take to ensure a healthy complexion.

How do I get rid of old acne scars?

Most people have suffered from acne at some time in their life.  Unfortunately, many people are left with prominent and permanent acne scarring.

Old acne scars (especially on the face) can be the cause of great self-consciousness and embarrassment.  They can be difficult to conceal with makeup and surgical treatment can seem very extreme.

The good news is that each year treatment for acne scars becomes more effective and sophisticated.  For example, our laser treatment using the Palomar Fractional Lux 1540 achieves outstanding results.  A series of treatments may be required for particularly deep scarring but it is reassuring to know that your complexion will continue to improve even after you have ceased the treatments.

At Avenue Advanced Skin Care we pride ourselves in our skilled and professional treatment of patients with acne scarring.  Our aim is to give you a refreshed revitalized skin.

If you are interested in treating acne scars then please call one of our therapists on 9521 5533 or click here to visit our website.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by using a high intensity light beam that is selectively absorbed by the hair follicle.  The hair follicle is heated and thereby damaged so that it can no longer grow hair.  The surrounding skin (being of a different colour) does not absorb the light and is therefore unaffected.

Because not all hair follicles are active at any one time, several treatments may be required to achieve the most permanent results.

Please call us at Avenue Advanced Skin Care on 9521 5533 to find out more about laser hair removal.

How safe is laser hair removal?

The safety of laser hair removal depends on the skill of the operator and the quality of the equipment used.  The best equipment uses high-power and therefore requires an inbuilt system to cool the surrounding skin.  An experienced therapist will be familiar with the settings for the machine and may even do a test patch to ensure your comfort and safety.

When it is performed properly, most patients feel a slight “twang” on the skin as if they had been flicked by a rubber band.

Proper care of your skin after the procedure is most important and our therapist will advise you on what is required.

Please contact our therapists at Avenue Advanced Skin Care on 9521 5533 or check out our website for more information.

Remember, at Avenue Advanced Skin Care we are Melbourne’s hair removal specialists with the most advanced equipment coupled with friendly and experienced staff.

Laser Hair Removal for Men

Many men are self-conscious about excess hair on their backs, chest, legs and eyebrows.

Shaving and waxing doesn’t seem quite appropriate and this is why many men are turning to permanent hair reduction using the Starlux hair removal system.

Unlike waxing, the Starlux hair removal system is comfortable – and the reduction in hair is permanent.

So if you are a man looking for hair removal in Melbourne then contact the specialists at Avenue Advanced Skin Care today on 9521 5533.

PHOTO DYNAMIC THERAPY

Photo Dynamic Therapy is now available at Avenue Advanced Skin Care!

What is Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)?
Photo Dynamic Therapy is a non surgical way of treating skin conditions such as solar keratosis (sun spots), acne and even certain early skin cancers such as Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma.  It can also be used to rejuvenate ageing skin.

How does Photo Dynamic Therapy work?
Photo Dynamic Therapy works through the application of a substance called ALA to the skin.  The ALA is absorbed by the more active cells such as pre cancerous cells, early forms of skin cancer and by the bacteria that cause acne.
The ALA is then activated by a light or laser which causes it to produce oxygen free radicals which destroy cells in the very near vicinity.  The treatment is therefore very specific to the skin lesions being treated and it is possible to specifically target abnormal cells without damaging normal cells.

How is Photo Dynamic Therapy performed?
The therapist will pre treat your skin with a micro dermabrasion in order to remove the superficial layer of cells.
Acetone is then used to remove grease from the skin.
20% ALA is then applied to the area to be treated and this is left in place for 30-60 minutes to allow it to accumulate in the target cells.
A gentle treatment with our special Intense Pulsed Light then activates the ALA and the target cells are destroyed.

What happens after the treatment?
Your skin will be a little red and inflamed (like a sunburn). It is important to avoid sunlight for at least 2 days.  You can expect a few days of moderate skin peeling but 7-10 days after treatment your skin will be healed leaving a brighter, clearer complexion.  Most of our patients report an added bonus of even texture, smooth lines and reduced pore size.
Results are seen very quickly and typically only a few treatments are required.  Of course, this depends on the severity of the condition.

In what cases is PDT not suitable?
PDT is not suitable for people who are:-
Pregnant or breast feeding
Have a history of keloid scarring
Have had Roacutane in the past 6 months

Please contact our Centre on 9521 5533 if you would like more information or to find out if PDT is suitable for you.
