Photo Dynamic Therapy is now available at Avenue Advanced Skin Care!
What is Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)?
Photo Dynamic Therapy is a non surgical way of treating skin conditions such as solar keratosis (sun spots), acne and even certain early skin cancers such as Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma. It can also be used to rejuvenate ageing skin.
How does Photo Dynamic Therapy work?
Photo Dynamic Therapy works through the application of a substance called ALA to the skin. The ALA is absorbed by the more active cells such as pre cancerous cells, early forms of skin cancer and by the bacteria that cause acne.
The ALA is then activated by a light or laser which causes it to produce oxygen free radicals which destroy cells in the very near vicinity. The treatment is therefore very specific to the skin lesions being treated and it is possible to specifically target abnormal cells without damaging normal cells.
How is Photo Dynamic Therapy performed?
The therapist will pre treat your skin with a micro dermabrasion in order to remove the superficial layer of cells.
Acetone is then used to remove grease from the skin.
20% ALA is then applied to the area to be treated and this is left in place for 30-60 minutes to allow it to accumulate in the target cells.
A gentle treatment with our special Intense Pulsed Light then activates the ALA and the target cells are destroyed.
What happens after the treatment?
Your skin will be a little red and inflamed (like a sunburn). It is important to avoid sunlight for at least 2 days. You can expect a few days of moderate skin peeling but 7-10 days after treatment your skin will be healed leaving a brighter, clearer complexion. Most of our patients report an added bonus of even texture, smooth lines and reduced pore size.
Results are seen very quickly and typically only a few treatments are required. Of course, this depends on the severity of the condition.
In what cases is PDT not suitable?
